Rear Single Dormer
A single dormer loft conversion is one of the most economical ways to add space to your home. It is quite a simple and straightforward process and hence one of the most popular types of loft conversions. A rear single dormer conversion usually results in the addition of a large master bedroom with ensuite / shower room to the property.
Rear L-Shaped Dormer
An L-shaped dormer loft conversion is a very popular type of conversion for Victorian properties due their existing L-shaped layout. Detached, semi-detached, terraced, conversion and purpose-built flats all lend themselves to this conversion type. The additional loft space “L-shape” extends over the rear outcrop of the ground floor.
Rear Mansard
A rear mansard loft conversion is particularly suited to Edwardian and Victorian terraced houses as well as first floor flats. The party walls are built up in brick, typically London Stock Brick allowing the conversion to be the full width of the property.
Rear L-Shaped Mansard
A rear L-shaped Mansard is very similar to a rear mansard but simply extends out over the rear of the property to form another room. An L-shaped Mansard is particularly suited to a period property and a mid-terrace property.
Hip to Gable Rear Dormer
For a hip to gable loft conversion the roof hip is removed, a new gable wall is raised from the existing walls of the house and the remaining pitched roofline is extended to meet it. The gable wall is usually built up in brick or render to match the existing gable wall.
Velux Loft Conversion
A Velux loft conversion is the simplest of all loft conversion types and is also considered the cheapest way to convert your loft space. It doesn’t require any roof extension but simply a reinforcement and internal reconfiguration of the existing loft and addition of Velux windows to one or both sides of the roof.
London Roof Loft Conversion
A London roof, also known as a butterfly roof, is one that can be converted from front to back so results in one of the largest roof extensions. This conversion type results in the addition of a whole new floor leading to the same floor space as the one below.

Case Studies
Dormer Loft Conversion in Streatham
This Victorian terraced property in Streatham was in desperate need of an extra bedroom and large family bathroom. We worked alongside an architect to build a dormer loft conversion for our client who needed to expand their living space for their growing family. For this project we removed the rear pitched roof and stripped out the existing roof space. Then we added a dormer roof extension, that featured two large windows (both with openings) to the rear and Velux windows to the front of the existing pitched roof. One window was located in the bedroom and the second large widow was located over the landing space of the stairwell, flooding the space with light.
For this Streatham loft conversion, we added a large bedroom and bathroom and completed a renovation of part of the first floor. The front slope in the loft conversion gave plenty of room to add a wardrobe and storage in the eves. We installed a full family bathroom including a separate shower and bath. We also renovated the first floor, which had a back addition to the property, as is common with Victorian Terraced houses. We renovated this upper floor space and added three Velux windows to the roof. Overall, we increased the number of bedrooms from two to three in this property and created a second sitting room on the first floor. We added a much-needed family bathroom to the property. Overall, we completed this loft conversion and renovation to the highest standard, working with an external architect and bringing their, and the clients, design ideas to life.
Mansard Loft Conversion in Streatham
We converted the lofts of three Edwardian properties in Streatham, all located on the same tree lined street between Streatham and Balham. We added Mansard loft conversions to each of these properties, which were the first-floor flats of each house. As all three Edwardian properties lie within the Telford Park Conservation area, we needed to apply for planning permission and show that the loft conversions were in keeping with the surrounding aesthetic. We applied and were granted planning permission for each property, but all came with compliance restrictions such as the type of brick to be used for the gable walls and the type of tile that can be used on the roof section. These were all very straightforward and normal compliance requirements.
For all three Mansard Loft conversions, we built up the gable walls in London Stock brick, completed the roofs in a blue/ black slate tiles with matching colours of the cladding around the mansard windows to ensure consistency in the aesthetic.
Once planning had been granted, we built the loft conversions which gave each of our clients a large extra bedroom with eaves storage and a large bathroom. All of the layout designs were very similar for each project. For light, we added large Velux windows to the front, all allowed under the planning application, and two large mansard windows to the rear. A roof light over the landing space flooded the stairwell and landing with light. Overall each of these first floor flats went from two bedrooms to three with an extra bathroom.
This is what one of our clients, Alexandria had to say about us:
“Creative Space are simply fantastic and i would highly recommend them to anybody who is looking to convert their loft.
I was heavily pregnant when we gave them the job, we had exactly 8 weeks to do the job and they completed on time and within budget. I went into labour the evening the scaffolding came down!
I found the whole team incredibly professional and understanding of our needs. Their quality of work is second to none too. ”
